Antônio loves Terezinha and his goal is to leave Atafona, a small fishing town that doesn't offer good life prospects. Antônio works at a gas station, while Terezinha spends her days selling crabs to the few tourists around. That's when Clarisse, a rich woman from the big city, arrives. Little by little Clarisse becomes interested in poor, rude Antônio. The romance that emerges between the two does not faze Terezinha, who sees it as her great chance to leave the village, to fulfill her plans for social advancement. She encourages their encounters, suggesting that Antônio get Clarisse pregnant.
