In a very Brazilian atmosphere, but dominated by a universal breath of the classical Mediterranean tradition, To the Left of the Father is the reverse version of the parable of the Prodigal Son. A transposition of the homonymous work by writer Raduan Nassar, the film tells the story of a family of Lebanese immigrants in the interior of Brazil, bringing to the screen themes such as love, incest and family relationships. A tragic drama of the eternal struggle between tradition and freedom.

"If Lavoura Arcaica ("To the Left of the Father") possesses such an enchanting force, it is because Luiz Fernando Carvalho knows that everything begins there—in this primal way of being born into the world."
- Jean-Philippe Tessé / Cahiers du Cinéma.

The screening of Lavoura Arcaica pays tribute not only to this already classic Brazilian film but also to the fifty-year anniversary of the publication of Raduan Nassar’s novel.
